Lexus has launched a new version of the GS at the Guangzhou International Automobile Exhibition in China. The range starts with the 2.5-litre V6-powered GS 250.
The engine features direct injection and variable valve timing to give 206bhp and 187lb.ft of torque. Driving through a six-speed automatic transmission Lexus claims 0-62mph in 8.6 seconds and a 142mph top speed.
Driver appeal is said to be enhanced over the outgoing GS thanks to a 14% stiffer body, revised suspension geometry and an optimised driving position. There is also a Drive Mode Select function to change the way the GS drives with the choice of Eco, Normal and Sport S settings. Where Adaptive Variable Suspension is fitted a further Sport S+ option is available.
The new GS has more room, particularly for rear-seat passengers. Equipment includes a 12.3-inch multimedia screen - said to be the largest on the market. The sound system is by Mark Levenson and has 17 speakers. Lexus also claims the new 'S-flow' air conditioning system has 'nanoe air purifying technology'. Safety features include Lane Keep Assist, Blind Spot Monitor and Lexus Night View.
For the UK the GS 250 will be launched at the same time as the new hybrid GS 450h in June 2012. A performance-themed F-Sport version will be available and full specifications will be announced shortly before the UK launch date.
