What's the news?
A few days back, Volkswagen showcased an extreme version of the Mk 7 Golf at the Beijing Motor Show, called the Golf R 400 Concept. The one-off show vehicle was based on the Golf R, but offered 100hp more, and all that packaged in meaner looking bodywork.
Now, if you want a Golf that offers more power than the standard R model, there's a real alternative: German tuner MTM's version of the Golf R. Output is upgraded to 360hp and a Golf R 400 Concept-rivalling 450Nm of torque, the 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine is now controlled by an M-Cantronic module from MTM. The increase in power and torque (and the standard seven-speed DSG gearbox) help the car achieve 62mph from standstill in 4.2 seconds, while the top speed is bumped to 155mph.
Stopping power comes courtesy of MTM's upgraded 380mm eight-piston brakes while the 19-inch rims are wrapped in ZR-rated Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 rubber.
Anything else?
In case you missed it, the car it's based on, the Golf R, uses an all-wheel drive system (4Motion in Volkswagen lingo), and so does this MTM-tuned version. And to complement the changes, this vehicle also comes with a four-tailpipe exhaust system by MTM.
