What's the news?

Toyota has now revealed engine and trim level options for the next generation Verso that goes on sale early next year. Included in the engine line-up is a new 1.6-litre D-4D diesel engine from BMW; and the Verso is to be the first Toyota model to be sold with this powertrain. The range has been expanded, too. Similar to other next generation models in its catalogue, Toyota has introduced a 'Trend' trim level that slots in below top-spec Excel guise.

Exterior

As you might expect, entry-level Active models don't get a huge number of bells and whistles on the styling front. You do get front fog lamps in this spec, but you'll need to upgrade to Icon to get 16-inch alloys; while 17s can be had on Trend and Excel versions. Distinguishing itself from the rest of the crowd, Trend models come with a bespoke black decal on the C-pillar to create a 'floating roof' effect. HID headlights can also be had, but only on top-spec Excel versions.

Interior

Again, like the outside, the Verso hasn't been fitted with a huge amount of toys if specified in Active guise; although every model above this has had Toyota's Touch 2 infotainment system installed as standard. The high resolution central display gives the Verso Bluetooth, DAB, a rear view camera, dual-zone climate control and USB/aux-in connectivity. Further up the trim-level ladder the system is upgraded to 'Toyota Touch 2 with Go' that adds satellite navigation with real time traffic, as well as Google Street View. Automatic lights, wipers and dimming rear view mirror are also fitted to Excel models.

Mechanicals

As we mentioned earlier, the BMW 1.6-litre turbodiesel engine has found its way into the Verso. Fitted to a six-speed manual gearbox, this new engine gives a claimed fuel economy figure of 62.8mpg while emitting just 119g/km of CO₂. Now whilst these figures aren't revolutionary in terms of efficiency, they are a big improvement over the 2.0-litre unit it replaces; and it also saves 20kg in weight. The unit is also fitted with a stop-start system as standard. The other engines in the range are the tried and tested 1.6- and 1.8-litre Valvematic petrol unbits that have been carried over from the outgoing model.

Anything else?

Unusually, whilst we know about the trim levels, Toyota is keeping prices under wraps until the New Year. First orders are expected in February with deliveries commencing in March.
