What's the news?

Following on from the well-received launch of the new Leon, SEAT has unveiled the third model variant - the Leon Sports Tourer (ST for short). The sleek-looking estate should prove to be popular with families and offers those who need to carry larger loads up to 1,470 litres of luggage space.

Exterior

SEAT's current design form is proving to be better than ever, and now with this third Leon-based model, shows that even when creating a more practical estate version it is keen to keep things looking sharp. Naturally the Leon ST bears much resemblance to its siblings from the front-on view and from the side back it features sharp lines that flow to the rear, which is now extended by 27 centimetres. The sloped rear window allows the Leon ST to retain quite a sporting look while a well thought out tailgate design should make light work of loading even the most awkward baggage. Despite the ability to carry so much more, the ST version weighs in just 45 kilograms heavier than the five-door Leon.

Interior

From the driver's seat there may not be anything to differentiate the Leon ST from its hatchback sibling, but the rear will offer a degree of flexibility. The back seats split in a 60/40 fashion and also feature access to the boot from inside the cabin when the seats are up. This is also convenient should one need to transport longer items such as skis or fishing rods without wanting to lower the rear seats.

Mechanicals

A good selection of engines will be on offer in the new Leon ST and will mirror what is currently available in the standard and SC versions. For those seeking some petrol fulfilment the 1.2-litre TSI engine, producing 105hp, is the entry-level option. It comes equipped with start-stop and brake energy regeneration and offers quoted fuel economy of 57.6mpg. The sportier FR model will be powered by a 1.8-litre TSI engine capable of delivering 180hp and 250Nm of torque.

Those opting for a diesel engine will have the choice of a 105hp 1.6-litre TDI, 2.0-litre TDI producing 150hp or a range topping 184hp version that generates a healthy 380Nm of torque.

Anything else?

SEAT expects the new Leon ST to be available to order towards the end of this year with first deliveries commencing in January 2014. Prices will be confirmed near that time, but are presumed to reflect a modest premium (less than £1,000) over the five-door SEAT Leon hatchback.
