Infiniti has announced today that the company will be using a new naming strategy across its model range from 2014. The theory behind the name change is to inject some clarity and cohesiveness into the brand's expanding portfolio.
As of 2014, all saloon and convertible models will begin with a 'Q' prefix; with SUV and crossover models starting with 'QX'. These prefixes will then be followed by a two-digit number, symbolising the position of each vehicle within the model range.
The first car to sport the name-change will be the Q50, a sports saloon set to be unveiled at the North American International Auto Show next month. The remainder of the Infiniti range will move over to the new strategy during mid-life refreshes and the like; while all future models will be launched with the new naming pattern already in place.
"After talking at length with our retailers, customers and business partners; the need for a new identity within our brand became evident," commented Johan de Nysschen, President of Infiniti Motor Company Limited. "'Q' captured the inspiration within the next generation of Infiniti models, as well as emphasising our performance credentials."
As well as providing consistency throughout the range, the 'Q' prefix also harks back to Infiniti's original model, the Q45 saloon, launched back in 1989.
