Ford has released the first image of its all-new B-MAX compact MPV that will be revealed in production-ready form at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show.

Based on an extended Fiesta platform the B-MAX has been designed to compete directly with the likes of the Vauxhall Meriva and features a sliding rear door with pillars integrated into the doors themselves, making for easier access to the back seats.

"The B-MAX combines an exciting, innovative design with features that only previously have been found in bigger cars," said Stephen Odell, chairman and CEO of Ford Europe. "It's a brand new car that responds to the needs of an increasing number of customers who want much more from their small cars."

When it goes on sale later this year the B-MAX will be available with Ford's new 1.0-litre EcoBoost petrol engine. The turbocharged three-cylinder unit is said to offer the same performance as a non-turbocharged 1.6-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, while achieving significant gains in fuel economy and emissions.

The unveiling at Geneva, in full production form, comes just a year after the concept was first displayed at the Swiss show.
