In addition to adding new engines and trim levels to the 1 Series range BMW is also set to introduce three new entry-level engines to the 3 Series saloon line-up in March. Both the 316d and 318d saloons feature BMW 'TwinPower Turbo' four-cylinder diesel engines, which feature a common-rail direct injection system combined with a single turbocharger with variable vane technology.

Both cars deliver their peak torque, of 260- and 320Nm respectively, between 1,750- and 2,500rpm and return identical economy and emissions figures of 62.8mpg and 118g/km. The £26,980 318d does have the slight edge in performance as its 143hp means it can hit 62mph nearly two seconds quicker than the £24,880, 116hp 316d. The new diesel engines can both be equipped with the optional eight-speed automatic transmission.

Joining the diesel engines in the range is the 184hp, four-cylinder powerplant of the BMW 320i saloon. The TwinPower Turbo engine is equipped with direct injection, Valvetronic and Bi-VANOS for optimum efficiency. While the £25,860 saloon can hit 62mph from standstill in 7.3 seconds it also returns a respectable 44.8mpg and 147g/km.

All three new engine derivatives go on sale in March, 2012.
