Ahead of its world debut at the Geneva Motor Show, Porsche has released full details of its new Boxster. Although the sharper, more distinctive styling is evolutionary, it's all change underneath, leading to lower weight and more efficiency, despite higher performance. Both Boxster and Boxster S models have been revealed.
For the first time in the Boxster's life its styling has been purposely moved away from that of the Porsche 911, so the headlights are squared off, the rears are smoothened out and there's a highly distinctive built-in 'ducktail' spoiler at the rear. Although dimensions have not been released, we are told that the new Boxster has a longer wheelbase and wider tracks, along with larger wheels as standard - all in a bid for greater dynamics. A side benefit will be increased passenger room in the redesigned cabin. Moving the windscreen forward will add to that feeling.
But it's what's under the bonnet (or technically, behind the occupants) that'll be of interest to enthusiasts. The flat-six engine layout has been retained, but they're new units, featuring direct injection, stop-start and energy recuperation in a bid to up efficiency. No CO2 data was released, but we do know that the PDK-equipped Boxster and Boxster S will return 36.7- and 35.3mpg respectively. That's despite power increases over their predecessors of 10- and 5hp respectively.
The Boxster's new 2.7-litre engine (down in size on the outgoing model) is based on that of the Boxster S's 3.4-litre unit and peak power is quoted as 265- and 315hp respectively. As before a six-speed manual gearbox is standard and the seven-speed PDK (dual-clutch) automatic will be optional. Go for the auto if you want the most efficient and fastest accelerating versions - so equipped the Boxster hits 62mph from rest in 5.7 seconds, with the S taking 0.7 seconds less. We also noticed in the video (see below) that there are proper gearshift paddles mounted behind the steering wheel.
Specification levels are generous in the UK. The Boxster costs £37,589, which includes 18-inch alloys, an Alcantara interior, remote control roof operation, a touch-screen infotainment system and a Sports mode. The £45,384 Boxster S adds 19-inch wheels, Bi-Xenon lights and part-leather upholstery. Following a debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March the new Boxster goes on sale in the UK on April 28.

16 May: The Porsche Museum is participating in the Mille Miglia recreation from 17-20 May. A 550 Spyder, three 356 Speedsters and a 356 Coupé will tackle the course that runs from Brescia to Rome.
16 May: Four Toyota GT86s and one Lexus LFA will compete in the Nürburgring 24 Hours race this weekend. Gazoo Racing will campaign the LFA and two GT86s, painted in black, white and red. The team has already had two class wins at the circuit with the Lexus. [photo]
