2012-04-03: Toyota Yaris Hybrid priced up

These are the first official images of the upcoming Toyota Yaris Hybrid, released ahead of the car's unveiling at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show.

While still unmistakably a Yaris the hybrid version does feature unique, more aerodynamic bodywork that differentiates it from the conventionally powered supermini. Featuring the new Toyota design face it combines an 'Under Priority' trapezoid opening frontal design element with the 'Keen Look' design implemented on the front lamps. Or you could say it's a bit sharper looking.

Unlike the Prius and Auris Hybrid the new car will do away with the 1.8-litre petrol engine of old and replace it with an all new 1.5-litre unit. Mated to a more compact electric motor, inverter and battery pack, which Toyota claims is 20 per cent lighter than the Hybrid Synergy Drive used in the Auris, it outputs a useful 99bhp. Due to the size both the battery and the fuel tank have been fitted under the rear seat meaning the boot space is the same 286 litres as offered in petrol and diesel variants of the Yaris.

No official word yet on fuel economy or emissions figures but it is expected that the Yaris will be cleaner than the Auris Hybrid that emits 89g/km CO2. With its main competitor, the Honda Jazz Hybrid, only managing 104g/km, that figure itself would make the Yaris Hybrid a class leader but Toyota's target is apparently a paltry 80g/km.

UK sales are scheduled to start during the summer with prices expected to start at £16,000. More details will be available when the car is officially unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in March.
