Hinson Motorsport has just achieved a new world record for top speed in a road-going Corvette of 214mph. The team was on course to break its own record when the car went into a spin at 230mph before rolling.
Luckily, the car rolled once and landed back on its wheels, though the bodywork was wrecked during the accident. The unidentified driver managed to walk away from the horrific smash and was later discharged from hospital after a check-up.
The high-speed crash happened at the Texas Mile, which is a speed trial run on the air strip of the Goliad Country Industrial Airpark. Competitors have 1.5-miles to achieve the fastest possible speeds and the highest speed wins.
Hinson's Corvette was taking part in the street car class using a turbocharged 1,428bhp engine specially built for the event. Record holder for the street car class at the Texas Mile is a turbocharged Lamborghini Gallardo at 250.1mph prepared by Underground Racing and driven by Richard Holt.
