Suzuki has released initial details and photographs of its funky new Swift. The new hatchback will debut at this month's
Paris Motor Show and goes on sale early in 2005.
The images show a pretty, sporty and distinctive shape, borrowing much detailing from recent Suzuki concept cars such as the
Concept S2 shown at the
2003 Frankfurt Motor Show. The new Swift indicates the future design direction for Suzuki, which should make the range more cohesive. Note in particular the bold 'S' badge on the grille and chunky roof and A-pillar.
At launch there will be three engines available: 1.3-litre petrol (90bhp at 6000rpm and 84lb.ft of torque at 4000rpm), 1.5-litre petrol with variable valve timing (101bhp and 98lb.ft of torque at 4000rpm) and a 1.3-litre diesel engine with a paltry 68bhp, but a healthy 125lb.ft of torque at only 2000rpm. There appears to be a choice of manual and automatic transmissions, though manual only with the diesel engine.
Equipment levels and prices have yet to be announced, but we would expect the Suzuki Swift to be a very competitive offering. The interior photograph shows bold styling and a high standard of specification, with electric windows, a/c and steering wheel mounted stereo controls.
We will be at the Paris Show, so watch out for the
full review and more pictures. We will drive the new Swift next summer; the review will be on the main
Road Tests page then.
