Detroit Auto Show 2011: Chrysler 300
The Chrysler 300 is more than just a facelift - it's a brand comeback.

What is it?

This image of discretion is none other than the new Chrysler 300. Well, not new so much as heavily revised from the old 300C. But like everything associated with the big Chrysler, the revision has truly been heavy. Most noticeable is the grille, now all soft and comely. Though the windscreen pillars are thinner and swept back a little more, lending the car a less harsh silhouette.

Inside, the cabin is bathed in natural light thanks to a glass roof, the materials are softer to touch, and the touch screen bigger than before.

Why's it here?

At the face of it this revised Chrysler 300 has simply shed some of its 'roid rage overtones for a more reserved ambience. However, Chrysler says the new look - the grille in particular - will underpin future models, all of which will contribute to a rather major "comeback" for the brand.

Some things don't change, though: US buyers get a choice of 3.6-litre V6 or 5.7-litre V8 petrol engines developing 288- and 358bhp respectively. In the UK the 3.0-litre V6 diesel will remain, though it's due for revision shortly.

Show stopper or floor filler?

If Chrysler follows through on its overtures of a comeback, this could be a very significant car for the Fiat-owned company. On its own merit, however, the hardcore Chrysler 300 enthusiast might bemoan the paring back of the uniquely robust image of the 300C.
