2010-10-26: First Drive: BMW X3 xDrive20d

We've already tried out the 2011 BMW X3 for size, but today (July 15) BMW released the first pile of photographs and detailed information for its junior SUV, including the impressive specification of a cheaper entry-level xDrive20d model.

Unsurprisingly the new X3 takes most of its styling ideas from the bigger X5 - particularly at the rear - and it's a less divisive shape than the BMW X1. Larger dimensions all-round move the X3 closer to its big brother too.

The biggest selling model is sure to be the xDrive20d, powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbodiesel. Maximum power is 181bhp at 4,000rpm, while torque peaks out at 280lb.ft between 1,750- and 2,750rpm. Top speed is 130mph, while the 0-62mph sprint takes 8.5 seconds. More importantly, this X3 returns 50.4mpg on the combined cycle and 149g/km of CO2.

BMW reckons that 80 percent of all X3s sold in the UK will be the xDrive20d model. Buyers won't be penalised for choosing the automatic version either, as its eight-speed transmission allows the X3 to maintain identical acceleration, top speed and fuel economy figures, with a single g/km of CO2 increase. That's thanks in part to the pairing of stop-start with the automatic gearbox - a first for BMW.

At a price of £30,490, the xDrive20d X3 is about £115 less than the outgoing model, yet it is better equipped. A leather interior, two-zone air conditioning, iDrive controller and 6.5-inch colour screen all come as standard, as does xDrive four-wheel drive with electronic control.

A wide variety of equipment is available for the first time on the X3, including things like Variable Damper Control and Drive Dynamic Control.

Following a Paris Motor Show debut the new BMW X3 goes on sale in the UK in November.
