In a departure from the norm, the next VW Jetta won't take on the look of 'simply a Golf with a boot'. The all-new design was revealed today (June 15, 2010) in Times Square, New York and it bears more than a passing resemblance to the company's
New Compact Coupé concept displayed at the
Detroit Motor Show earlier this year.
Despite the US setting for the unveiling - and some distinctly American detailing around the lights of the Jetta depicted in the first press pictures - the Jetta will be sold in the UK with a full complement of suitable engines.
New to the four-door Jetta range are 104bhp 1.2-litre and 158bhp 1.4-litre TSI petrol engines. They'll join a 122bhp version of the 1.4-litre unit and the proven 197bhp 2.0-litre. However, diesel power should still dominate sales with two TDI options: 104bhp 1.6-litre or 138bhp 2.0-litre.
Full specifications have yet to be announced, but VW has revealed that 1.2-litre TSI and 1.6-litre TDI engines will be allied with BlueMotion fuel-saving measures such as stop-start and brake energy regeneration. The result is 53.2mpg and 123g/km for the TSI unit; and 68mpg and 109g/km for the TDI.
The new VW Jetta will go on sale early in 2011. Pricing will be announced closer to the time.
