The HSD is a hybrid version of the just facelifted Auris five-door hatch. It uses the same basic hybrid power system as the Prius, so it has a 1.8-litre petrol engine and electric motor that lets the car run for up to 1.2 miles on electricity at up to 30mph.
Why's it here?
Toyota is intent on offering hybrid models in almost all of its model ranges and the Auris HSD is a major step in that direction. By using the existing Prius engine and electric motor, Toyota has been able to create the HSD model relatively cost-effectively. It offers 74.3mpg combined economy and impressive 89g/km carbon dioxide emissions to make it road tax-free and particularly appealing to company car drivers.
Show stopper or floor filler?
It may have economy and emissions on its side to crow about, but the Auris HSD is floor filler. The dowdy Auris styling sees to that, though this car will be on sale in UK showrooms in July with a price tag around the £17,000 mark.
