Like the Chevy Volt, the Audi A1 E-tron is a 'range extender' that uses a lithium ion battery and electric motor combo to power the wheels, plus a petrol engine to charge the battery when it runs low. Uniquely, that engine is a rotary Wankel design, like the Mazda RX-8's.
Why's it here?
The A1 E-tron is yet another signal that Audi is serious about the electric thing, it being the third model to bear the moniker that will eventually become a distinct green brand.
Show stopper or floor filler?
It's definitely a concept, so no word on production, but it's arguably Audi's show star. The stats make compelling reading, and the technology works. Peak power is 101bhp, so it'll hit 62mph in 10.2 seconds, yet 123mpg is possible and 45g/km of CO2 emitted. Its total range is 124 miles, 31 of which come before the Wankel kicks in.
