The Peugeot 308 CC is now available with a new turbocharged 1.6-litre THP petrol engine rated at 153bhp and producing an impressive 177lb.ft of torque. To handle this kind of output, the French manufacturer, together with specialist supplier Aisin AW, has developed a compact new six-speed automatic transmission.
Designed to withstand up to 221lb.ft of torque, this new 'AT6' gearbox uses technology and lessons learned from the premium AM6 unit, as fitted to the group's most powerful diesel engines, including the V6 and 2.2-litre HDi models.
With gear ratios chosen to match the petrol engine's torque characteristics, Peugeot says this new drivetrain package will deliver a significant reduction in fuel consumption compared to previous models. Emission levels are also down by around seven percent.
The AT6 gearbox can be used in regular 'adaptive' automatic mode, or enthusiastic drivers can take advantage of the 'System Porsche-designed' Tiptronic function, making the most of the engine's rev range.
The new automatic model will be available in SE and GT trim levels, unlike the previous THP 140 auto, which was only available at SE level. Prices will be £23,595 for the SE and £25,795 for the GT.
