Ford's legendary sports car gets a refresh for the 2011 US model year, with a new 3.7-litre V6 delivering more power and improved economy. Specification changes include the addition of Ford's clever MyKey, a programmable key that allows you to limit the top speed and stereo volume for when your teenagers are driving it.
The Mustang is an institution in the USA, and under a great deal more pressure with GM and Chrysler adding classic muscle car names to their showroom stock. The Ford remains a desirable buy though, for its looks, performance and price. This 301bhp V6-engined machine is likely to be available in the USA for around $20,000-$24,000. That's just not fair.
That new V6 engine is aluminium; there's a new six-speed manual and the Americans are getting excited about the V6 Mustang's 30mpg 'Highway' fuel consumption figure. That's US mpg, so it is 36mpg here - though it's also a cruising figure rather than the combined one we all use in Europe. Even so, Ford's improvements to the 2011 model have reduced consumption figures by 25 percent overall. To achieve that Ford has added things like an electric power steering system, that six-speed manual with longer ratios and aerodynamic alterations to the body and under-tray.
Sadly, Ford's pony car isn't likely to ever be seen on UK forecourts. That's not to stop you getting one, as plenty of independent importers are happy to source one for you in the US. Chances are if you're going to do that though you'll go for one of the sillier performance derivatives, with a great big tyre smokin' V8 and a Shelby badge.
