We knew that Porsche was working on a new Spyder and given the Boxster Spyder's bias towards being driven with its roof down, it's no shock to learn that the roadster will make its world debut at next month's
LA Auto Show.
Based on the
Boxster S, the Spyder eschews an electrically folding hardtop in return for a much simpler - and lighter - canvas item, while the rear deck now features a double-bulge design, fixed rear spoiler and raised level LED brake light. Although the windscreen isn't any different to that in the regular Boxster, the side windows are lower to fit in with the design of the rear.
The Boxster Spyder promises to be as good to drive as it is to look at, as Porsche has reduced the weight to 1,275kg and increased power from the S's 3.4-litre engine to 320bhp. Additionally, there is a new sports suspension and the centre of gravity is lower.
Surprisingly, the Spyder is not just another limited edition, instead joining the Boxster line-up as a series production model. Hence buyers will have the full gamut of options, including PDK dual-clutch gearbox and the Sport Chrono Package. So-equipped, the new Boxster can apparently hit 62mph from rest in just 4.8 seconds and a top speed of 166mph, while combined consumption is a reasonable 30.4mpg.
The Boxster Spyder goes on sale in February 2010, with prices for right-hand drive markets yet to be announced.
