What is it?
The Fluence is based on the current Renault Mégane and will be the first of the French firm's electric vehicles to reach production. As a five-seat, four-door family car, it will be one of the most practical all-electric vehicles on the market. It will also feature Renault's 'Quickdrop' battery changing system or can be rapidly charged in just 20 minutes.
Why's it here?
The Fluence may look like a concept designed for the Frankfurt show, but this car is very close to being production ready, so Renault is highlighting its expertise in this sector. Renault is also keen to show off its new developments, such as the Quickdrop battery system that allows a new, fully charged battery to be slotted into place in just three minutes. The different charging options are also new, allowing a full charge in four hours or a rapid charge in 20 minutes.
Show stopper or floor filler?
This is a show stopper and no mistake. Quite apart from the clever technology that is included in the Fluence to make it one of the most advanced electric vehicles and that it will be on sale within two years, the Fluence is a great looking car. There's just enough reality in its shape and proportions to let you know this is a production-ready machine, so hopefully the finished car will look just as good.
