An all-new Toyota Land Cruiser was launched at the
Frankfurt Motor Show. For the UK it will feature 3.0-litre diesel power and a five-speed automatic transmission when it goes on sale in December.
Some European countries will have the option of a 4.0-litre petrol V6, but the UK only gets the 171bhp, 3.0-litre D-4D diesel engine. Coupled to a five-speed automatic transmission - the only transmission offered - economy and emissions are 34.9mpg and 214g/km respectively.
The Land Cruiser remains a traditional off-roader with a separate chassis. Rigidity is increased over the old model while insulating mounts are designed to absorb engine, drivetrain and road noise. The 'LC4' version gets an electronic Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS), which adjusts the front and rear anti-roll bars for on- or off-road performance. Top-spec LC5 Land Cruisers get Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS). This includes rear air-springs for self-levelling and switchable height control.
Only the five-door body will be sold in the UK, although a three-door model will be available in other markets. On the base LC3 model the third row of seats is optional, but other Land Cruisers have seven seats as standard. When not in use the rearmost seats can be folded flat into the floor. Other interior features include a compartment with USB port for music players and space in the centre console for a compact fridge unit.
Standard equipment includes Downhill Assist Control, 17-inch alloy wheels and climate control. The LC4 adds 18-inch alloys, triple-zone climate control and leather upholstery. The top LC5 model gets a rear seat entertainment system and Multi-terrain Select, which adjusts power and brake distribution for different surface types.
Exact prices for the model range will be announced before the model goes on sale on 1st December.
