2010-01-22: First Drive: Volkswagen Golf R

What is it?

The Golf R is the spiritual replacement for the previous generation R32, but in place of the R32's V6 engine is a new 266bhp 2.0-litre turbocharged unit. Driving through a standard six-speed DSG twin-clutch gearbox, the Golf R covers 0-62mph in 5.5 seconds and has a top speed capped at 155mph. This is enough to make it the fastest accelerating Golf ever made - and the quickest VW from the factory off the mark.

Why's it here?

It's a new hot Golf and this is the biggest motorshow in Germany - do you really have to ask? It's a chance for Volkswagen to show off a bit and also steal some of the limelight from the supercar mob. After all, VW will shift a hell of a lot more Golf Rs than all of the supercars put together, so it's an important car for VW and for buyers. It also showcases VW's new four-wheel drive technology, which can allow up to 100 percent of the power to be sent to the rear wheels. Now that's got to be worth a look.

Show stopper or floor filler?

No doubt about it, the VW Golf R is a show stopper. It may not have a multi-zillion horsepower, 11 wheels or an engine that runs on space dust, but this is an important link in the VW armour. The new four-wheel drive system should make the Golf R more entertaining to drive than its predecessor too. Revised bumpers, LED driving lights and 18-inch alloys also help it stand out. The Golf R is on sale in the UK in December, with prices set closer to then.
