Alfa Romeo has announced the arrival of two, brand new engines. Both motors are Euro 5 compliant and boast advances in both performance and economy. Initially offered in the 159 saloon and Sportwagon the new engines will be fitted to the Brera and Spider later this year.

The 159 1750 TBi is named after the Alfa Romeo 1750 Berlina of the 1960s. The 1.7-litre engine uses variable valve timing, direct fuel injection and turbocharging to produce 197bhp and 236lb.ft. Alfa claims that the 1750 will do 0-62mph in 7.7 seconds and 147mph flat out with impressive in-gear acceleration. On the combined cycle fuel consumption is quoted as 34.9mpg and the CO2 figure is 189g/km.

Diesel fans can choose the new 2.0-litre JTDM powerplant, with 168bhp and 266lb.ft. Technical highlights include a variable geometry turbocharger and various measures to reduce friction within the engine. The result is a claimed 8.8-second 0-62mph time, only slightly slower than the 2.4-litre JTDm, and a top speed of 136mph. A gallon of diesel should last 52.3 miles with CO2 emissions of 142g/km.

Coinciding with the introduction of the new engines is a restructured range with five trim grades; Turismo, Turismo Sport, Elegante, Lusso and TI. Turismo Sport is a new level and comes with 17-inch alloy wheels, cloth-trimmed sports seats and a leather sports steering wheel. Also new is Elegante which comes with 'Alfatex' cloth, parking sensors and darkened aluminium interior trim.

Along with the Brera and Spider it seems likely that the 147 replacement will be offered with these powerplants when it is launched - possibly at the Frankfurt Motor Show.
