2011-06-07: Tesla reveals S sports saloon

Tesla has released a series of photos showing its new electric saloon - the Model S - being driven. The surprisingly roomy car is scheduled to go on sale in late 2011.

Anyone who feels that 'environmentally friendly' cars should be dull and unattractive is going to be disappointed. We've said before that the Model S is a good-looking car and the latest photos do nothing to change our minds.

Even five months after we got our first proper look at the Model S, the specification still seems fairly extraordinary. Despite the sleek looks there is room for a pair of rear-facing child seats under the tailgate. When not occupied by children there is room for a mountain bike, surf board and 50-inch television. Further luggage space can be found under the bonnet. Add to that performance and range that apparently compare favourably with petrol-powered family cars and, on paper, the Model S looks hard to beat.

The launch date for the Model S is still scheduled for late 2011.
