BMW has chosen the Shanghai Motor Show to launch a V12 version of the
new 7 Series. The twelve cylinder engine develops 536bhp and is mated to BMW's first eight-speed automatic transmission.
The all-aluminium 6.0-litre V12 was developed as a new engine and features twin turbochargers. It develops 536bhp and 553lb.ft, over 100bhp more than the 4.4-litre V8 in the 750i. Other technical highlights include double VANOS, variable valve timing and direct fuel injection. BMW claims that the 760Li will accelerate form 0-62mph in 4.6 seconds while 21.7mpg is quoted for the combined cycle. It also conforms to the latest EU5 and ULEV II emissions standards for Europe and the USA.
Externally the 760Li can be identified by the V12 insignia on the chrome 'gills' that overlap the front wings and doors. The front grille has been redesigned too, with an extra wide chrome frame while the chrome-tipped exhaust pipes help identify the top of the range 7 Series from the rear. The 760 also receives a unique design of 19-inch alloy wheel.
The V12 is built on the long wheelbase 7 Series platform, which gives rear-seat passengers more leg room. The interior receives various luxurious touches including illuminated stainless steel sill covers with a V12 logo. The instrument panel is finished in nappa leather while the roof lining and sun visors are trimmed in Alcantara. Equipment includes four-zone air conditioning, a navigation system and cruise control with automatic braking. The usual 7 Series options are offered, including night vision, side view cameras in the front bumper and Adaptive Headlights.
The chassis features Dynamic Damping Control, speed-related power steering assistance and the Dynamic Drive anti-roll stability system. Air suspension is also standard on the 760Li incorporating self-levelling rear suspension. As with other models in the 7 Series range Integral Active Steering is optional and provides speed-sensitive steering of the rear wheels.
The Shanghai Motor Show opens on 22nd April and runs for one week. BMW will announce performance figures and prices for the 760Li later this year.
