| Updated Sportscar | Ariel Atom 3 |

Ariel has built a larger, more refined Atom using valuable feedback from existing owners and the media. The small British firm is hoping to sell its unique package around the world and appeal to prospective new buyers.

The £30,000 Atom 3 makes further use of ties with Japanese manufacturer Honda, featuring the new Civic Type R's engine that has improved low-down torque and a smoother power delivery, all controlled by a new fly-by-wire throttle. The entry-level 2.0-litre i-VTEC will remain normally aspirated producing an unchanged 245bhp, but for power-to-weight junkies a supercharged version is also available, kicking out a ludicrous 300bhp.

Along with the engine, Honda has supplied the latest Civic six-speed, close-ratio gearbox and there is also the option of a Quaife limited slip differential. For an extra £1,250 Bilstein will provide its latest 10-way adjustable dampers in place of the standard five-way items, promising to improve road manners and give even greater track performance and adjustability.

Most significant of the changes to the new Atom 3 is that it is larger than its predecessors; 60mm extra shoulder room and 100mm extra elbow room are achieved thanks to a wider chassis with cleverly revised diagonal side structures, although track and overall width remain unchanged. The Atom 3's aerodynamic properties have been improved using Computer Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations, subtly restyling nearly every body panel whilst retaining the gloriously distinct Atom look. The aero testing has further helped to develop optional wind deflectors and a new seating set up sees passengers sat lower and less buffeted by incoming air.

The new Atom has been tailored to suit a greater range of customers, with particular focus on sales in the US and China. The Atom 3 is tipped by its creators to be the 'best so far' and on paper at least, we have to agree.
