BAC renews Mono with a turbo

If you want to tear your own face off in the quickest and most highly amusing way possible, you could do worse than slapping your £165,950 (yes, that's the correct figure...) down on one of these bad boys. It's the second generation of the BAC Mono and, despite the fact it still has to cede the title of 'Most Powerful BAC Yet' to the 340hp Mk1 Mono R, the Mono Mk2 now has turbo power. Turbo power which comes from a 2.3-litre engine worked upon by no less a company than Mountune, and if that name seems familiar and you're aware that BAC has had a long association with Ford, then you'll be aware that this 2.3 is almost certainly the engine you'd find in the likes of the current Focus ST 280, the old Mk3 Focus RS and the EcoBoost-badged Mustang. Here, it chucks out 337hp (up 27hp on the old Mono) and 400Nm, which - in something which weighs a wonderful 570kg - means 590hp-per-tonne. So for your 165 grand, what you get is a car which'll thump to 62mph from rest in 2.7 seconds and which will top out at 170mph, if your head doesn't come clean off in the airflow at such a speed. Styling-wise, it takes cues from the Mono R and has a smaller frontal area plus a lower overall height, while the chassis is dripping in names which get petrolheads' blood flowing fast and free - things like lightweight AP Racing brake callipers and two-way adjustable dampers from Swedish firm Öhlins, for instance. The BAC also comes with a carbon floor and the option to have carbon-ceramic brakes which slice off another 2.55kg of unsprung mass from each corner of the Mono, if you so wish. Neill Briggs, BAC's director of product development, said: "Today marks a monumental and hugely proud day for myself and everyone associated with BAC. Launching another incredible product and holding our heads high amongst the automotive elite is truly humbling - and special thanks go to the talented BAC team as well as our partners and suppliers worldwide. The success of the first-generation Mono was beyond our wildest dreams and we can't wait for even more success with the new model in brand-new territories around the globe. This is a stunning new generation of an automotive icon and an exciting new way for us to take on the world."
