Audi's proposals for the 2009 LA Design Challenge are aimed squarely at drivers accustomed to automation. Incorporating autonomous technology, the concepts are designed to ensure the driving experience doesn't become sterile. Audi calls them eSpira - the aspiration - and eOra - the essence.
The eSpira bears a passing resemblance to a fully-enclosed Auto-Union racing car of the 1930s. If the styling is inspired by Audi's past the rest of the concept looks forward. No details have been released but apparently the control logic will be unlike today's cars. The idea is that the driver will exert control with the smallest body movements and gestures for 'an unsurpassed command of the drive'.
The eOra uses the same control logic but with a completely different look. It is described as 'dynamic and efficient' whilst taking up a small amount of road space. Audi likens the car's behaviour to a downhill skier 'carving the roadscape with precision'.
Audi's vision of 20-years ahead is certainly intriguing. Without more details we're not sure about the new control system but if the future means cars that look like the eSpira we can't wait.
The LA Auto Show runs from 4th to 13th December.
