About us
Car Enthusiast was founded in 1999 when online publishing was still a relative novelty. It has since grown to become a premier motoring website, providing readers with immediate access to test drives, news and features on some of the world's most exciting and interesting cars, from Ferraris to Fords, Maseratis to MINIs and everything in-between.
But Car Enthusiast is more than merely a web portal for those wanting to read the most up-to-date tests and car news. Car Enthusiast now offers magazine, newspaper and website editors the opportunity to deliver their readers access to the same expert opinions from Car Enthusiast's writing team in their publications. Whether it be a feature on how to master the tricky art of drifting, live motorshow reporting and photography, driving a Bugatti Veyron with the accelerator pinned to the floor or just a humble road test on a Ford Fiesta, Car Enthusiast can deliver. To length; to spec; on time. Every time.
In this agency role Car Enthusiast's writers have had words published in some of the most prestigious and influential motoring and mainstream media outlets around the world. Car Enthusiast is a contracted supplier to Yahoo! Cars UK and Ireland - one of the most visited motoring websites in the UK. Car Enthusiast's writers are published extensively; open virtually any magazine or newspaper on the newsstands and you'll find words written by our team. On the right is a small selection of the publications our team has featured in. In short, this is us:
Shane O' Donoghue - Managing Editor
It was perhaps inevitable that Car Enthusiast's founder, Shane, would end up doing something involving cars. Learning to drive at just 8, Shane spent most of his childhood in and around his dad's garage business. Finding some time for academia among the cars Shane studied Mechanical Engineering at university working on projects for Jaguar, Cosworth and Lotus. Two years at Jaguar in the combustion system development team followed completion of a PhD, Shane then moving to independent engine testing company Scott Gibbin in the role of Engineering Manager.
Starting Car Enthusiast in his spare time, it quickly grew to the point where it became its own company. Shane now devotes his time to Car Enthusiast, writing for its numerous contracted outlets as well as overseeing the day-to-day activities of the company.
Kyle Fortune - Editor
Without a garage-owning dad like Shane, Kyle spent most of his childhood reading about rather than actually driving cars. An Honours degree in Geography was followed by a journalism course where work experience with Autocar and Top Gear magazines cemented his ambition to break into motoring writing. He started on a small road-safety title before joining an agency where he managed a number of large clients, editing the Daily Express World Car Guide and providing motoring copy to numerous very well-known web and print publications.
Kyle brought his web and print publishing expertise to Car Enthusiast, joining in 2007 in the position of Editor. Car Enthusiast and Yahoo! Cars keep him busy, but you'll also see his name in an increasingly wide range of magazines, newspapers and websites.
Mark Nichol - Staff Writer
Mark has always had a passion for writing, but cars didn't come into his life until the late '90s, when he became dangerously obsessed with bespoilered Japanese super saloons and gold alloy wheels. He has virtually simultaneous introductions to Sony's Gran Turismo and Evo Magazine to thank for that.
So, after years daydreaming about cars and poring over car magazines when he should have been doing his job, Mark decided he might as well do those things for a living. To that end he gave up a dull career in marketing and enrolled on Sunderland University's journalism degree course with his sights set on becoming a motoring writer.
He impressed so much on his first work placement at The Independent that the newspaper sent him on the launch of the Peugeot 207 GTi. Spells at CAR Magazine and Auto Express followed before Mark landed a job on the motoring desk at Auto Express, from which he moved to Car Enthusiast as a full-time staff writer. He's hoping to use his news desk experience to further our resources in that field while also becoming part of our expanding car review team.
The rest of the team
Car Enthusiast's team is bolstered by the expertise of Alisdair Suttie and Dave Jenkins. Alisdair's years at BMW Car and What Car? gave him a keen eye for a great news story. Alisdair also helps out with the hectic launch schedule. Dave is our resident road tester, his engineering background giving him the tools to properly assess any car. In addition, Syd Wall assists with photography and Phil Ahern and his team at Caint.com are responsible for the sophisticated IT structure underpinning Car Enthusiast.
